Happy New Year LJ peeps.. My only new year resolution was to be more social, so I thought I would say hi and I'm generally around.

I started a new blog about tinkering with things. So far, it's just a few little arduino projects, I'll probably put some cooking stuff on there too.

It's foggy today. Adena & I played a new game last night though -- BuyWord. It was recommended thru BoardGameGeek; it's a fun word game. I didn't like the paper money, I think BGG's suggestion of poker chips would be fun.

It's actually rainy/overcast, not foggy.

Nothing much else to say at the moment. Been reading the new George RR Martin book of short stories; it's good.

No pix, but I did make a pretty good butternut squash soup, inspired by my sister's recipe with Adena's modifications. (no celery, scallions instead of onions, add ginger)

1 Butternut Squash
a few scallions
a little garlic
a little ginger
a blop of olive oil
1 medium potato
1 carrot or a handful of baby-cut carrots
3 or so cups of veggie broth

I cut the squash in half and roasted it at 375 for 45 minutes, then let it sit in the turned off oven while I did everything else.

I sauteed the garlic & grated ginger in olive oil, then cooked the scallions, carrots & potatoes til they started to get soft. Then I put everything in a big pot, scooped out the perfectly soft squash, and mixed everything together with the broth til it looked like soup, then simmered it. But I should have simmered it a while longer, some of the carrots & potatoes were a little crunchy. It tasted great, though.

Now that the light is starting to come back, I feel a new urge to get productive! So I joined up at the Hat Factory , a local videoblog loft / workspace. So far, I've been very productive for about half an hour, but it might be time for lunch. :)

The people seem very nice though.

Not much else to report yet. There's a great velvet elvis behind me, though.

It might be a stereotype, but I do feel manlier when I fix something at home. :) In this case, I spent a few hours this weekend fixing two little windows in one of the french doors in my apartment. It actually wasn't that bad; the worst part was learning the hard way where everything connected under the paint.

But now.. a fixed door (just needs some paint)!

I already knew this but it's funny to see the facts.

I went for a great run this morning on the Minuteman Trail and after I showered & changed, I walked across the street from my friends' place to the traditional breakfast, Dunkin' Donuts. Since I'd had a bagel yesterday, I thought, "Hmm.
.. how about a low fat muffin.. sounds moderately healthy." As I walked back, I bit into the sugar crusted top and my impression started to change. It was delicious, but a quick google searched confirmed it. Almost twice the calories of the chocolate glazed donut I'd had yesterday. Yes, less fat, but that's about it. I guess it makes sense considering how massive they are.

Anyway, don't get me wrong.. it was delicious.. but maybe I'll just have a donut tomorrow. :)

I finally figured out how to play a lot of those fun german board games like San Juan and carcassone on this german website (of course) called brettspielwelt.de

It's kind of tricky to get set up but once it was, I learned to play Can't Stop! (a fun dice game) with Jade Lennox and Temvald.. Fun times!

Went down to Stanford today, and I managed to catch the last free Caltrain! woohooo! It's a 'Spare the Air' day so public transit was free til 1pm.

Who doesn't like a free train?

Also getting really excited; Adena & I are going to Turkey in just under 2 weeks.. Can't wait. I'm going to take a bunch of pictures & post em, of course. :)

Running

I just did my first run with my new Ipod Nano & Nike Plus thang. It worked very well, despite being a crappy cold windy sunset evening. I swear, the weather seems even worse this summer. Hopefully mid-august and later will bring nicer weather. But the sensor was good; even without calibration it was within .05 miles of my google map mapping. (Which is actually likely to be less accurate).

3.03 miles including 5 minutes of walking on either end.

Woohoo! Technology.. Next stop, 5k run!

Hello world should be easy but...

My ISP is super paranoid so everytime I fatfinger my password they lock me out of ssh (even though plaintext ftp seems to have no such restrictions)

Mess around for a while before I realize they only have php4 not php5.

php4 hello world fb example has some random errors (I don't know php really but I can hack around in it if the baseline app is working)

installing the CPAN module has taken over an hour and it's still compiling random crap.

I'll try again later. :P Maybe I need some newfangled language like ruby!

Also, I have run twice so far. I didn't manage to run while I was out of town last week, so I'm extending Project Shuffle by one week and giving myself an extra run this week. Seems fair. Or whatever. The point is really to get back with running, so as long as I do that, good enough. :)

Did the usual run around Stow Lake, once on Wednesday in the beautiful sun (it was packed), and once yesterday in the fog. (it was deserted.. surprise)

I went for a very nice run yesterday at Stanford. It was kind of deserted, but it was great to run around the trees and paths as the sun was going down. Halfway to Shuffle-ville!

Also, I dropped my car off for service today. Got the $450 beat down! ugh. I guess it's better than crazy expensive repairs later or a breakdown, but sheesh! I hope I get lots of belts & fluid & gizmo replacement for that.

And finally, MUNI is currently running 1 for 4 in terms of being able to just take the dang N-Judah to or from my destination. The other 3 times, there has been a backup / slowdown / broken train somewhere in the tunnel, so I've had to resort to buses or the F Market, which seem to be ok.

Running

Rave: To myself, for exercising both days this weekend. Adena & I went on an 'urban hike'; basically we walked from the Inner Richmond to downtown, about 3.5 miles more or less. Then today, we went on a little jog! I've started week one of the Shuffle Incentive Plan. If I run 2x/ week for 4 weeks, I'll get myself a shuffle (which will make running easier.. of course... :)

Rant: Blackberries are great for email, but they suck for apps. I tried to get my brother-in-law-to-be a chess game for his blackberry since he's going on a long-ass plane flight. So I buy it from Handango, which is a huge endeavor to begin with. Fifteen bucks on his credit card later, we have a random zip file which wants Blackberry installer. Um.. we all have Macs, no go. So I upload it to my website in a hidden directory. Then add the mime type.. Now it's downoading to his BB but it's just data garbage. I have a PC at home so I guess he'll just have to wait til then. Feh. And anyway, where's gnuchess?

Planetfall

Pink Floyd

The first was after Floyd, the robot from Planetfall and Stationfall. He was friendly, helpful and a great sidekick character. It's amazing how compelling the old-school text adventure games were.

The second was after Pink Floyd. Growing up in the 70s and 80s, how could ANY angsty teen avoid becoming totally obsessed with Floyd? I had all of their tapes. :)

runners

I ran today, a short run around stow lake. I'm trying to get back in to running, so I'm happy I got in a jog on a beautiful day. I was listening to 'Best of Bootie 2005', a mashup compilation.

On the minus side, muni is now no longer running the N-Judah to Caltrain, so I have to switch to the J; making the soul-crushing total of public transportation time now 2:45. EACH FREAKING WAY! No thank you. I'll just drive.
